Going Home Another Way

Week 1 – The Call

Three Magi on the Way to Bethlehem by Hans Thoma

There Weren’t Three Magi?

Were you shocked when I stated that Matthew didn’t specify three Magi? I was astonished when I was doing research and first saw that claim. I had to go back and reread those Bible verses. A few times. The text says there were three gifts, but doesn’t specify how many Magi brought the gifts. It’s amazing the details that our minds fill in between the lines. And how what we’ve heard repeated over and over becomes accepted truth.

For Reflection

Is there something you believe you “know” about your relationship with God (because you’ve heard it repeatedly) that might not be true? For example, do you believe God doesn’t love you as you uniquely are (with all your faults and beauty)? Or that God may “speak” with some people but not you?

Is there something you believe you know about yourself (or your journey) that might not be true? Maybe you’ve been told you’re not creative/smart/spiritual/etc. Is it possible that this isn’t true, and you believe it just because you’ve heard it so often?
