The Wisdom of Advent – Learning to Wait

Week 1: Hope

Mary’s response to the angel who appeared at the Annunciation is a spectacular example of faith and trust. She was willing to let go of all her plans and hopes for her life and accept the very uncertain future that God offered.

Nouwen describes this demonstration of faith, “Just imagine what Mary was actually saying in the words, “I am the handmaid of the Lord…let what you have said be done to me” (Luke 1:38). She was saying “I don’t know what this all means, but I trust that good things will happen.” She trusted so deeply that her waiting was open to all possibilities. And she did not want to control them. She believe that when she listened carefully, she could trust what was going to happen.”1

  • What is God asking you to trust?

  1. My prayer list has the following: “Ask God for the grace to respond to the unexpected with the courage and humility of Mary.” I’m not sure where I read that but a cut/paste added it to my prayer list. Daily I think about Mary’s faith. Can you imagine what it was like for her? I certainly can’t — I can only touch the surface. I believe God is asking me to trust Him. But, thankfully, not to the depths that Mary was asked.
